Doll Narratives

(Continued)

The fifth doll we will call “Emma” does not know it feels shame. Emma has fantasies of harming her sister, with the iron their mother uses to press their father’s shirts. Emma imagines dropping the hissing plugged-in iron into the bathwater after she has pressed it onto her sister’s back. She got the idea from a science movie at school about the hazards of household appliances. Emma does not feel guilty, because she would never actually do this to her sister. Emma loves her sister and must take care of her.
